New[]

The movie opens with a recap of Mata Nui defeating Teridax and restoring Spherus Magna, narrated by Tahu. Five years later, Tahu is about to fight Ahzoka for Lewa to be released. Ahzoka loses due to her inexperience, and as Tahu utters Mata Nui's name while trying to calm her down, Ahzoka lambastes him for his belief in Great Beings, citing the sins of the Core War as justification. Having never heard the full story of said conflict, Tahu sympathizes with Ahzoka, relating to her how much he and Mata Nui have matured for the sake of others, but as the two red warriors are about to reach an understanding, they are attacked by Velika, who reveals himself as the Great Being who murdered Karzahni and Tren Krom, among others. Axonn arrives to bail out Tahu, Lewa, Vakama, and Ahzoka, stating that Toa Helryx has recently granted the Toa special permission to kill the evil Great Being if necessary, but Velika reveals that he is not the being in question, but actually possessed by him. Revealing his name to be Maori Nui, he taunts the heroes that the only way to stop him before it's too late is to kill Velika now. Ahzoka, however, plays into the evil being's ego by accusing him of being too scared to fight the heroes on their level, prompting him to abandon Velika's body and assume the form of a Dark Fire Lord, revealing his true name as Maori Nui. Maori Nui attempts to kill Velika, but Lewa flies the Matoran to safety. The evil Fire Lord shoots Lewa down as he flies Velika to safety, seemingly killing them, and Tahu, Axonn, and Ahzoka fight Maori Nui together. Just when Maori Nui appears to have the upper hand, Tahu reveals he still has access to the Golden Armor and uses it to destroy the evil being forever in a pillar of holy fire. The heroes and Vakama mourn for Lewa and Velika, but the other Toa Nuva enter the arena with an injured but still living Lewa and Velika. The audience cheers as the Toa Nuva are finally reunited and peace on Spherus Magna continues.

Original[]

The movie opens with a recap of Mata Nui defeating Teridax and restoring Spherus Magna, narrated by Tahu. Five years later, the Shadowed One has amassed an army of the remaining Dark Hunters to take over the world. Mata Nui brings Lhikan back as a Toa from the Red Star, instructing him to gather as many red warriors as possible to stop the Shadowed One.

Tahu and Jaller had recently released Lewa from the custody of Ahzokalangleykazama when Lhikan approaches them. Both them and Vakama, whose Toa powers are restored by a special Toa Rebirth Stone, are asked to come with him on a dangerous mission. They are also joined by Ackar and a hot-headed new warrior from another land, called Nurxof. Toa Norik, Axonn, and Trinuma are also informed and asked to assemble a backup party to assist Lhikan's new team in the event of an emergency. Perditus is also recruited after winning a race, and so is Malum after being offered a reward. Velika hears about the mission and starts tailing the team secretly for reasons yet unknown.

Halfway through their quest, Lhikan's party is ambushed by Triglax and Lariska, but they survive the ensuing battle, despite Nurxof almost getting them killed, and manage to find the Dark Hunters' new hideout. When the Shadowed One and his army are defeated, Nurxof urges Lhikan to kill them all, but Tahu objects, citing a tragic event in the distant past that became the true reason behind the Toa code's no-kill policy. A disillusioned Nurxof disregards both Tahu's argument and the code, due to a similar incident where Nurxof's original team was decimated, but he his body is suddenly taken over by Maori Nui, a Great Being who was using Velika's body prior. Maori Nui, now using Nurxof's body, kills the Shadowed One and all remaining Dark Hunters, assimilating their parts to become a Dark Fire Lord.

The heroes are overpowered at first, but the tide turns in their favor when Norik arrives with his backup team. Tahu borrows power from the other nine warriors and his reboot counterpart(from within a vision) to equip an enhanced version of his Golden Armor and defeats Maori Nui while also saving and purifying Nurxof. Vakama turns back into a Turaga, having spent his Toa Power to help Tahu, the heroes return home, and peace is finally restored.

Trivia[]

  • The original subtitle was "Forever Red", named after an episode of Power Rangers with a similar premise.
  • The five year gap between Journey's End and the movie references how Hero Factory replaced Bionicle until the latter was rebooted in 2015.
  • Of all the returning Toa Nuva, only Kopaka and Takanuva are recast.
    • Pohatu and Onus are mute in the japanese dub track, due to Keiji Fujiwara and Kiyoyuki Yanada passing away in April 2020 and November 2022 respectively.
  • The two commentators in the race won by Perditus are parodies of Fodesinbeed Annodue from Star Wars Episode I, and they're voiced by former WWE commentators Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler.
  • According to GokaiWhite, some, but not all the events of "The Powers That Be" and "The Yesterday Quest" are retconned as being non-canon or semi-canon by the beginning of the movie.
    • The Shadowed One and some Dark Hunters were originally planned to be major antagonists in the movie, until the old plot was scrapped in late 2020. Though they are not mentioned in the new plot, it is safe to assume The Shadowed One is either dead, or imprisoned with presumably all the other Dark Hunters.
  • The movie's animation style will be similar to Bionicle: The Journey to One, and the music will be scored by Tsuyoshi Sekito, with some of Nathan Furst and Mike Raznick's pieces reused.
  • The end credits shows fan art and MOC's of Tahu and other Toa of Fire. The ending theme is an original song by Super Sentai vocalist Takyauki Miyauchi, called "Fire 炎".
