Story[]

Jikanmu claims to have been fighting the Vahkshi, Scryptorek, and Dai-Shinra since before the Toa Luminus and Toa Metru were brought to Ankoku Nui due to the disturbances to the timespace continuum caused by some of Scryptorek's experiments. He guides the humans and Toa across the planet, slaying all but one of the Genjuu and destroying the Mako Reactors before bringing them all together to kill the last Genjuu and infiltrate Scryptorek's lair. After a couple falling outs with the Toa, and not finding his name anywhere in Scyrptoek's archives, they finally realize he is not who he says he is, that he is the Makuta in disguise.

It is revealed in Prologus: Bionic Fantasy, however, that Scryptorek was in fact using Jikanmu's body, while the latter's mind was suppressed to keep from being completely dissolved. Jikanmu sent his spirit into the Lifestream just before his body was mutated to suit his nemesis Scryptorek, so he could help Aerith restore Ankoku Nui's crystal.

Powers and Abilities[]

Jikanmu wears the Legendary Kanohi Vahi, or at least his own copy of it, as Vakama theorizes, which lets him speed up or slow down time in any area he chooses within his vicinity, and amplifies the powers of his Chronosceptre, with which he fights in similar fashion to a Dragoon.

Personality[]

All Jikanmu allows the other Toa to know about him is that he takes his duty fairly seriously, and wants to end Ankoku Nui's decay as soon as possible. He is also an avid historian who is especially intrigued with uncovering the true reasons behind many mistakes of the past, yet he believes that those who cannot respect the past, even the bad parts, do not deserve a future, as best expressed in one of his cryptic sayings along the journey, sometimes to the annoyance of some of his new companions. This culminates in Jikanmu pressuring them to become recklessly aggressive at the expense of disrespecting their personal feelings and even getting them injured while infiltrating Scryptorek's base, and later the Toa Luminus and Toa Metru eventually deducing his true identity.

All these negative traits, as expressed by Scryptorek through Jikanmu's body like a puppet master controlling a puppet, greatly contrast the Toa's nobler, true persona of a more idealistic, patient, legitimately caring person who would never push his friends around or automatically make a cruel decision without first considering alternatives and gathering as much information possible.

Quotes[]

  • "Perhaps they are the cause of the maladies that ravage this planet, called Ankoku Nui, or they became hostile with extreme prejudice in response to the decay you see all around you." - about the Genjuu.
  • "This is the reason the planet's dying! It's life energy is being sucked out faster than it can replenish, by these massive constructs." - about the Mako Reactors.
  • "I have seen many ways certain individuals' lives could have played out, different events that could have unfolded."
  • "In one of these alternate timelines, you, Squall Leonheart, were supposed to have died by the hand of a Sorceress named Edea, and what would have been the rest of your life from then on, is but a dream... your final fantasy." - addressing the infamous "Squall is dead" fan theory
  • "Respect the past, and the future is your reward."
  • "A sect of the old Shinra, loyal to the company's old ways, was here on Ankoku Nui before us, and evolved with the aid of a Makuta named Scryptorek, who also created the Vahkshi to do their bidding." - explaining Dai-Shinra to the Toa
  • "Foul monster! You've officially squandered my patience!"
  • "Have you been falling asleep in your history lessons?  If you don't have respect for your past, then you can never expect to have a future!"
  • "There is no Jikanmu. There isn't even a Toa of Time! And to think you actually believed in such a legend." - last lines, before transforming.

Etymology and symbolism[]

Jikanmu is made of the japanese words, "jikan(時間)", meaning "time", and "mu(無)", meaning "null", and thus means "Timeless" in Matoran, and in roughly translated japanese. That name is in fact, an alias used by Scryptorek, and also symbolizes the Makuta's desire to become immortal.

The makeup of his set form, assembled by GokaiWhite himself, consists of pieces used in sets from both generations of the Bionicle line, as an allusion to the Final Fantasy series' recurring theme of duality, with the pieces from Generation 1 sets symbolizing past, and the pieces from the most recent Generation 2 sets representing future.

Diabolos Cover Art

With "Jikanmu's" true nature in mind, the cover art of Gackt's album, "Diabolos" (to the right) can be interpreted as a fittingly symbolic representation of Jikanmu's form being a "mask" for the sinister Scryptorek.[1]

His similarity to the Dragoon job class is a precursor to Scryptorek's summoning of Kardahamut.

Trivia[]

  • Jikanmu is the only character to appear in all four segments of Bionic Fantasy.
  • The tip of his sceptre is a golden Chronicler's staff, which would imply he was once a Chronicler, assuming he first existed as a Matoran, which has originally been impossible before he and the Matoran Crono are revealed to be the same character in Prologus.
  • His english voice is known for Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead, who is a survivalist in a post-apocalyptic world, much like how Jikanmu is be a lone warrior fighting for Ankoku Nui's survival.

  • Jikanmu's japanese voice actor previously voiced Genesis from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, and performed "RETURNER - Demise of Darkness", which is used as the main theme of Bionic Fantasy.[2]
  • The pose he makes in his first appearance is similar to Kain Highwind's iconic pose most notably seen in the logo for Final Fantasy IV. They also have a similar fighting style.
