Maori Nui is an obscure, but major villain introduced in Bionicle: Brotherhood of Flame, and is quite possibly the main villain of the entire Bionicle storyline.
Story[]
In times immemorial, Maori Nui was a god who created Spherus Magna, and lived among the Great Beings, covering up his true nature as a legend. He eventually possessed the body of Velika to observe the events in the Matoran Universe, and after Spherus Magna was restored, he concluded that the poor leadership of the Great Beings led to the planet being destroyed 100,000 years ago, and began to enact a plan to take over the planet for himself. After five years of hiding in plain sight, Velika was confronted and Maori Nui showed himself, only to finally be destroyed by Tahu through the use of his Golden Armor.
Personality[]
Maori Nui's personality is not really fleshed out much, except he is apparently self-centered and evil like Teridax. His possession of Velika's body was done to use the Matoran's life as a leverage if he was ever discovered, showing his cunning is at least on par with Teridax, but despite his certainty that the Toa would never violate their morals even to destroy him, Maori was goaded into accepting Ahzoka's challenge to fight her, Tahu, and Axonn at their level. He could have called her a hypocrite for potentially bartering Lewa's life when she called him a coward for using Velika as a shield, but he was more angered by Ahzoka's jabs at his egotism, and at being reminded of his (still mysterious) role in the events that initially destroyed the planet he intends to rule[1][2].
Powers[]
Maori Nui possessed the ability to take complete control over a being's body, but cannot transform that being, or possess more than one body at once. After watching Tahu and Ahzoka's fight, however, he was able to create his own body reminiscent of a Dark Fire Lord, presumably as an ironic insult to them and their kind. It is not explicitly explained if his godly powers have diminished for having used Velika for so long, which may have been a possible factor to his defeat by Tahu, despite being a god. Also, it is not clear if becoming a Dark Fire Lord restricts him from using any of the other elements.

Trivia[]
- Maori's name is derived from the name of the language from which most of the early Bionicle characters' names originated.
- His true form was planned to be in the movie at one point, until the decision was made for him to become a Dark Fire Lord resembling William Furno of Hero Factory.
- Maori's personality and some of his character background is similar to the Greek god Zeus, particularly how he was depicted in the God of War series as a power-hungry deity who, along with his fellow gods, took morally questionable actions to maintain his iron grip on mankind under the excuse of maintaining harmony throughout the universe, until whatever legitimate concern they had for the world was finally overridden by Zeus' paranoia and fear of Kratos.
